Sustainability Committee

The Sustainability Committee is the principal instrument of sustainability governance of 鶹Ӱ. Principle areas of focus are the College’s short- and long-term sustainability planning, particularly as it pertains to fulfilling our Second Nature Carbon Leadership Commitment.

Sustainability encompasses the following definitions:

  • That which “…meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
  • The integration of ecological health, human equity, and economic vitality, with the knowledge that justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion are inextricable from the pursuit of a more sustainable future.
  • The recognition that it is in the campus community’s best interest to mitigate its climate impacts, build climate resilience, and factor sustainability in core decision-making.

The Committee will:

  • Review the annual sustainability report and provide recommendations for how to most effectively and equitably achieve our institutional carbon commitment and broader sustainability goals.
  • Identify opportunities to improve our sustainability goals, our approach to reaching those goals, and continually adapt to our changing climate and the local and global context in which we operate.

How to Join the Committee

The committee chairs will initiate the recruitment process during the beginning of Fall semester.

Students

At least two student representatives are nominated by SAS, one of whom will
be the SAS Sustainability Representative. We will also have an application for students to apply to serve on the committee, which will be shared to all students via email.

Students can serve one or two-year terms. By serving a two-year term, student Sustainability Fellows can play a larger leadership role and help enhance continuity of campus sustainability efforts and communication between students and administration.

If electing to serve two-year terms, they must be on campus both years (e.g., cannot be studying abroad).

Faculty

A call for faculty selfnominations will be initiated by the Dean of Faculty. Faculty representatives serve a one-year term with the potential for a second year depending on their continued interest and ability to commit.

Staff

Staff representatives are selected on an asneeded basis. Staff representatives serve a oneyear term with the potential to continue serving multiple years depending on their continued interest and ability to commit.

All members must commit to one year of service, which includes attending and participating in all meetings. The SC meets monthly during the school year.

Organizational Structure

The Sustainability Committee is a multi-stakeholder committee under Business Affairs. It serves an advisory role to the Facilities Planning Committee, ensuring that capital projects are aligned with institutional sustainability goals.

Decision-Making Process

Proposals and recommendations will be submitted to the Executive Director of Facilities Management & Auxiliary Operations for approval. The Executive Director will then submit recommendations to the VP of Business Affairs.
